Is AION 2 Free to Play? The Subscription, Daeva Pass and P2W Question, Answered
Yes — AION 2 is free to play. There is no box price: the base game downloads and plays for free from October 5, 2026. Money is optional and comes in three forms: a $15-per-30-days Special Quai Membership (player market and currency exchange access), a per-character Daeva Pass with free and premium tracks, and a cosmetics-and-consumables cash shop. NC’s published position is that shop items do not affect gear progression or long-term combat power — whether you buy that is the pay-to-win argument below.
Is AION 2 really free?
The whole money map in one table — what is free, what is optional, and what each optional piece actually gates. Nothing in it is required to download, log in and play.
| Piece | What it is and costs |
|---|---|
| Base game | Free to download and play from October 5, 2026 (PC — Steam and NCSOFT PURPLE) |
| Box price | None — the base game is the free product; paid tiers are optional add-ons |
| Founder's Pack (optional DLC) | $24.99 / $49.99 / $99.99 — all three include the 5-day Advance Access (Sept 30 – Oct 4) plus bundled cosmetics |
| Special Quai Membership (optional) | $15 per 30 days — unlocks the player market, the Kinah↔Quna exchange and member perks |
| Currencies | Kinah is earned in game; Quna is bought with real money; the two are exchangeable through a player-driven exchange |
Base-game status and Founder’s Pack pricing verified on the official Steam listing; membership name and price from NC’s “New Product Info: Special Quai Membership” notice (18 Aug 2026). Verified September 29, 2026.
If you want to be in on September 30 instead of October 5, that is the Founder’s Pack’s job — not the subscription’s. The AION 2 Founder’s Pack is one-time DLC whose three tiers differ only in bundled items; the membership is a recurring 30-day entitlement. They overlap in exactly one disputed spot, covered below.
What the $15 subscription unlocks
The subscription’s official name is the Special Quai Membership, announced in NC’s “New Product Info” notice on the official site (18 Aug 2026) and priced at $15 per 30 days on the US reference card. It is a single tier — no premium membership ladder on top.
| Official name | Special Quai Membership |
|---|---|
| Price | $15 per 30 days (US reference price) |
| Player market | Personal trading and market access sit behind the membership |
| Currency exchange | The Kinah↔Quna exchange is a membership feature |
| Member shop & storage | Member merchants, remote storage and storage-capacity perks reported by community sources |
| Required to play? | No — required for market trading and the exchange, not for the game itself |
Name, price and existence are from the official notice; the perk breakdown (market, exchange, member merchants, remote storage) is corroborated by community sources and should be re-verified against the in-game description on October 5. Verified September 29, 2026.
One overlap with the packs, now settled by the official listing: every Founder’s Pack tier — Standard, Deluxe and Ultimate — bundles a 30-day Special Quai Membership per the official Steam listing. That covers your first month of market access and the other member perks; the Founder’s Pack tiers and prices page breaks the three tiers down.
Daeva Pass: every pass has a free and a premium track
The battle pass system is the Daeva Pass, and its structure matters for the pay-to-win question: passes are per character, more than one can run at a time, and every pass carries two tracks — a free track anyone progresses by playing, and a premium track unlocked with Quna.
| Scope | Per character — not account-wide |
|---|---|
| Concurrent passes | Multiple passes can be active (season-based) |
| Tracks | Free track for everyone; premium track per pass |
| Premium unlock | Bought with Quna, the premium currency |
| Observed unlock level | Character level 20 (playtest observation) |
| Season 1 | Planet's Call, tracked by community databases |
Community-reported, not officially confirmed — reward lists and pricing per pass need live verification after October 5, 2026.
Cash shop: what NC says it will not sell
NC’s published position on the shop is explicit: items sold there do not affect gear progression or long-term combat power. The assortment NC has shown skews to cosmetics — wings, skins and pets — plus convenience consumables.
Two caveats belong next to that statement. First, the shop was disabled in the September playtest build, so the launch assortment still needs live verification — the official notices and the Steam listing are the authoritative list when it opens. Second, at least one convenience item already has a name: instant-clear tickets for the Daily Dungeon appeared as a shop purchase in the playtest menu — convenience, not power, but exactly the category worth watching. The AION 2 dungeons guide covers what those tickets skip.
The pay-to-win argument, both sides
This is the debate that will follow AION 2 past launch, and both sides have real evidence. Neither column below is ours — they are the two positions actually in circulation, with their sources.
| Point | NC’s side | Community’s side |
|---|---|---|
| Monetization model | Membership + battle pass, positioned as access and convenience — NC's product information states shop items do not affect gear progression or long-term combat power. | Putting the player market and the currency exchange behind a $15/month gate means trading — core to the gear economy — sits behind a paywall. |
| Battle pass rewards | Every Daeva Pass ships a free track anyone can progress. | Premium tracks reportedly carry enhancement-type resources and pass shop coins, not just cosmetics — the resource leak is the whole worry. |
| Currency exchange | The Kinah↔Quna exchange is player-driven and connects free players with paying ones. | The same exchange is a cash-to-gold pipeline: paying players can effectively buy the earned currency. |
| Track record | Korean business press reported NCSOFT positioning AION 2 away from the Lineage-style monetization playbook (July 2026). | NCSOFT's back catalog is exactly why players distrust the starting state — the fear is drift after launch, not day one. |
NC’s column cites its product information and July 2026 Korean press coverage; the community column summarizes r/Aion2 and playtest discussion. Both re-checkable after launch. Verified September 29, 2026.
Our stance is the same one this site applies everywhere: no verdict without live data. The three things to watch after October 5 are the shop’s actual assortment, the premium tracks’ reward lists, and the Kinah↔Quna exchange rate — those three answer the pay-to-win question better than any pre-launch argument.
Founder’s Pack vs subscription
| Founder’s Pack | Special Quai Membership | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | One-time: $24.99 / $49.99 / $99.99 | $15 per 30 days |
| What it buys | 5-day Advance Access (Sept 30 – Oct 4) plus bundled cosmetics per tier | Player market, currency exchange, member shop and storage perks |
| Expires | No — the items and access are permanent | Yes — 30 days, renewable |
| Bundles a membership? | Yes — all three tiers bundle a 30-day membership (official Steam listing) | Is the membership |
Short version: the pack buys when you start and how you look; the membership buys what you can trade. If you only buy one thing and starting early does not matter to you, the membership is the one that changes daily play — which is precisely why it is also the most debated.
AION 2 free-to-play FAQ
Do you need the Special Quai Membership to play AION 2?
No. Leveling, story, dungeons and open-world PvE all work without paying anything. The membership is the gate to the player market (personal trading), the Kinah↔Quna currency exchange and member-only shop and storage perks — economy access, not game access.
What is Quna in AION 2?
Quna is the premium currency bought with real money. Kinah is the currency you earn by playing. They are exchangeable in both directions through an in-game exchange, which is why the free-to-play economy and the paid one are directly connected — and why the exchange sits behind the membership.
Is the Daeva Pass shared between characters?
No — the pass is per character, and more than one can run at a time across seasons. Community trackers observed each pass unlocking at character level 20, with Season 1 titled Planet's Call. Community-reported, not officially confirmed.
Is AION 2 pay to win?
There is no evidence-based verdict before launch. The honest position: the base game is free, no purchase is mandatory, and NC's published stance says shop items do not affect gear progression or long-term combat power — while the market gate, the exchange and premium-track resources are real community concerns. Watch the live shop contents and pass reward lists after October 5 rather than either camp's predictions.
