AION 2 Factions: Elyos vs Asmodians — Which Should You Pick?
Both factions get the same eight classes, the same stats and the same progression — no AION 2 faction choice can weaken your character. What the choice actually decides is your starting zone and opening story, the half of the divided world you call home, and your side in the Abyss faction war.
Elyos vs Asmodians at a glance
AION 2 keeps the series’ two-faction structure: at character creation you choose Elyos or Asmodians, and that choice places you on one side of a divided world. The table below is the honest version of the comparison — three rows genuinely differ, three rows are identical, and the identical rows are the ones players worry about most.
| Aspect | Elyos | Asmodians | Same for both? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starting zone & opening story | Its own opening territory and story arc on the Elyos side of the divide | The mirrored opening on the Asmodian side | Different — names not yet published |
| World & aesthetic identity | The sunlit half of the series’ divided Atreia | The shadowed half | Different — this split is the premise |
| Character creation & clothing | Same creation options, not faction-locked | Same creation options, not faction-locked | Same for both (community-reported) |
| Main territory & hubs | Levels through the Elyos half of the map | Levels through the Asmodian half | Different — specifics not yet published |
| Class roster | All eight launch classes | All eight launch classes | Same for both |
| Stats & progression | One shared progression system | One shared progression system | Same for both |
Verdict sources: the shared class roster is official; identical appearance options and stats are community-reported from KR/TW and playtest coverage; starting-zone and territory differences are confirmed in structure, but NCSOFT has not published zone or hub names for the global build. Verified September 30, 2026.
What actually differs — and what does not
Start with the part anxious planners care about: there is no wrong faction for your character’s power. All eight launch classes are open to both sides, no faction-exclusive stats, skills or progression systems have been announced, and nothing in the announced dungeon or progression lineup is restricted to one faction. Community coverage of the KR/TW and playtest builds goes further, reporting identical character stats and creation options across the divide — community-reported, not officially confirmed.
What actually differs is softer: your opening story line, the art style and terrain of the half you level through, the territory and community you share it with, and — the one consequence with teeth — which side of the Elyos–Asmodian war you occupy once The Abyss opens. Population balance between the two sides is a live question with no official answer (see the FAQ). Practical upshot: pick by taste and by whichever side your friends pick, because that is the side you will actually share a world with. The mechanical cost of a “wrong” pick is zero.
Elyos: the radiant side
The Elyos are the people of the sunlit half of the series’ broken world. In the lore carried over from the first AION, they ended up on the light-struck side of divided Atreia and cast themselves as the world’s blessed defenders — the radiant, order-branded half of the feud. AION 2’s official story beats (AION Tower, Divided Atreia, Death of the Empyrean Lord) keep that two-sided structure, and choosing Elyos places your starting territory and opening story on that side of it.
What the Elyos side looks like in practice comes from the September 2026 playtest, whose covered route followed an Elyos character: the leveling journey ran through vivid, saturated landscapes — alien-flavored open plains, shallow-water flats you wade across, and the return of the sky whale, the first game’s signature sight. These are single-source playtest observations (community-reported), not official zone descriptions — the global build’s starting zone names are not published yet.
Flight is part of that journey from the early levels: short stamina-bound hops at first — roughly 15 seconds in the playtest build — with the first ascension around level 20 handing out the Intermediate Daeva Wings. How wings, stamina and Wind Streams work is covered in our AION 2 flying guide.
Asmodians: the dark side
The Asmodians are the other half of the same broken people. Series lore places them on the shadowed side of divided Atreia, where surviving harsh, dark terrain — not radiant order — defines the faction’s identity. AION 2 gives them their own starting territory, opening story and half of the map, mirroring the Elyos structure exactly.
Two honesty notes this page will not skip. First: the playtest coverage this site draws from followed an Elyos character, so Asmodian-side texture here is series framing plus confirmed structure — this section will be expanded with verified global-launch observations instead of guesses. Second: being Asmodian does not lock your character’s look. Community comparison coverage reports character creation options are identical for both factions (community-reported, not officially confirmed).
Does your faction change your class or gear?
No — and this is the paragraph to re-read if you are worried about picking wrong. The class roster is identical: every one of the eight launch classes is open to Elyos and Asmodians alike in the roster NCSOFT has published. Gear, enhancement and the talent tree exist in one shared progression system, not a faction-specific pair, and no faction-exclusive stats or skills have been announced.
The real variables are social: which population you level alongside, and which side of the war you occupy in contested zones once The Abyss opens and Space-Time Rifts spawn. The progression systems themselves — enhancement, ascension, Stigma — are mapped in our AION 2 gear progression guide, and if you are still choosing a class rather than a faction, the AION 2 classes overview breaks down all eight.
Faction choice and PvP
The Abyss is defined by the Elyos–Asmodian opposition, and Space-Time Rifts exist precisely so one faction can invade the other’s territory — your faction choice decides which side of that war you are on, not how the war works. The modes themselves — windows, formats, rewards — are broken down in our AION 2 PvP guide.
Can you switch factions?
NCSOFT has not published faction-switch rules for the global build. Whether you can change sides after character creation is therefore unconfirmed — this page deliberately does not answer “yes” or “no”, because no official answer exists as of the October 5, 2026 launch. What is confirmed is when the choice happens: Elyos or Asmodian is selected during character creation — how permanent that selection is has not been stated. If an official statement or a live-server mechanic appears, this section will be updated with the source.
AION 2 factions FAQ
Which faction should I pick in AION 2?
Pick with story tone, aesthetics and your friends in mind — not your character's power. Classes, stats and progression are the same for both factions, so the choice costs nothing mechanically; what it decides is which half of the world you level through and which side you occupy once the Abyss faction war opens.
Do factions have different classes in AION 2?
No. The eight-class launch roster — Gladiator, Templar, Assassin, Ranger, Chanter, Cleric, Sorcerer and Spiritmaster — is identical for Elyos and Asmodians. No faction-exclusive classes have been announced for the global build.
Which faction has more players in AION 2?
There is no official data. NCSOFT has not published faction population figures for the global build, and the September 2026 playtest did not measure balance. Treat any site quoting faction population numbers today as guessing.
Does faction affect progression or gear?
No faction-specific progression, stat or gear systems have been announced. Community coverage of the KR/TW and playtest builds reports both factions share identical stats and creation options — community-reported, not officially confirmed.
